For six years a new correctional facility was under construction. Over the course of five days, UDC moved nearly 2,500 inmates without incident to the new prison located approximately 30 miles away. This class will cover in detail the planning, execution and follow up steps taken to ensure a safe and successful relocation of an entire prison. The class will walk through everything from moving physical items such as gym equipment, office supplies and inmate property, to the security protocols enacted, the restraint, escort, and movement teams, IMS structure, allied agency support and everything else associated with relocating a prison. Correctional officers and community supervision officers are the foundation of effective corrections. Without adequate staffing, public safety, security and the health of those entrusted to corrections is jeopardized. The ACA Research Council was tasked to develop a national survey on the challenges correctional systems face with recruitment and retention of correctional staff. DOCs across the country were surveyed about their challenges, the strategies they use to combat those challenges and how effective those strategies were. This workshop will provide the results of that survey, common themes found and current innovative strategies. 3.Blend relevant leadership theory with the challenges we are facing today that require greater efficiency with less staff.
