C-1K Revisiting BMP — A Scientific, Evidence-Based Approach to Reducing Problem Behavior (CE)

Crystal Ballroom K Track: Mental Health

Historically, behavior Modification Plans (BMP) have been utilized in correctional environments to reduce and extinguish severe problem behaviors, such as self-injurious behavior (SIB) . In recent years, as SIB in correctional environments has increased, so has the need for and composition of BMPs. Unfortunately, as demand for such plans continues to increase and with sufficient training limited, BMPs are not being produced through a specific, evidence-based and systematic approach; thus, decreasing the efficacy of such plans. This presentation will review the seminal research and literature outlining the scientific process of conducting BMPs and how such plans should be developed in a correctional environment. The presentation will also introduce the application of a preference assessment, as part of a BMP to identify those individualized reinforcers, which when introduced, results in the patient being more likely to demonstrate alternative, healthy behaviors. Lastly, this presentation will review two cases of implemented BMPs, with a discussion surrounding their successes, 1. Participants will be able to identify and apply behavioral interventions that will assist participants with decreasing undesirable behaviors (SIB) and increase appropriate behaviors in correctional environments. 2. Participants will be able to complete preference assessments to determine which reinforcers the patient is more likely to respond to. 3.Participants will be able to utilize fight hierarchy in reinforcer potency to carry out a BMP and produce positive behavioral change. failures and limitations.
