WORKSHOPS Monday, Jan. 30 ▼ 1:30–3 p.m.

C-1G Pandemic Behind Bars: COVID-19 Impact on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (CE, CME, Y CE) Grand Ballroom 13 Track: Mental Health Sponsored by the Coalition of Correctional Health Authorities Mental Health Working Group As the world transitions from a pandemic emergency response to a “new normal” there are many lessons learned across multiple domains that should be captured to inform future practices. This is especially true in the congregate living environment of our nation’s jails and prisons where staff are tasked with among other duties, managing, mitigating and treating the physical and behavioral health needs of the incarcerated population. While the whole world was challenged by COVID-19, incarcerated individuals, already vulnerable due to poor health, mental illness, substance misuse and difficulty coping were impacted in unique ways. These pre-existing vulnerabilities coupled with dramatic change in daily routine pushed some incarcerated persons into crisis to include risk of suicide. This workshop will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on suicide risk. First, the impact of COVID-19 on relationships for the incarcerated will be addressed. Other impacts will be discussed including impacts on the environment, reduced opportunities to engage in programming and the lack of access to the outside world. Next strategies will be presented

to decrease risk during the pandemic. This will include access to mental health care, positive psychology and resilience. Also, issues will be discussed about responsive communication, supportive environments, systemic cultural considerations and leveraging technology. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to summarize suicide risk among the incarcerated. 2. Participants will be able to explain the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on suicide risk within carceral settings. 3.Participants will be able to identify strategies to decrease suicide risk during pandemics.
