City, Oklahoma; Jessica Moncada , Quality Improvement Program Specialist, Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections, Garden City, Idaho B-3D Roadway to Success: Freedom through Trucking Crystal Ballroom D Track: Reentry The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Logistics (MAL) Division operates a robust freight operation using inmate truck drivers. The freight operation is made possible through a multi-disciplinary effort made with our educational partners, including Windham School District and community colleges, to provide training required for licenses prior to inmate job assignment. Once assigned as a truck driver, individuals obtain valid work experience and documented driving hours used upon release to attain employment. By providing training and

relevant work experience in a highly employable field, the TDCJ is working to further improve reentry success and reduce recidivism rates. Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss the benefits of inmates participating in truck driving programs during their incarceration. 2. Identify security and logistical challenges incurred by assigning inmates to truck driving jobs and discuss strategies to mitigate risk. 3. Outline the required training for an inmate to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and on-the-job training that occurs once assigned as a truck driver. Moderator: April Zamora , Reentry and Integration Division Director, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Austin, Texas Speakers: Billy Hirsch , Division Director, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Huntsville, Texas; Kristina Hartman , Superintendent, Windham School District, Huntsville, Texas
