B-3C Approaches to Addressing Length of Stay in Juvenile Facilities Crystal Ballroom C Track: Juvenile The Length of Stay (LOS) Policy Academy’s goal is to support jurisdictions to identify and address key factors contributing to lengths of stay for youth in post-adjudication placement. After reviewing jurisdictional data and participating in learning modules, jurisdictions identified their key factors contributing to length of stay. Then, jurisdictions developed action plans to address the identified key length of stay factors and improve youth outcomes. During the session, we will provide an overview of the LOS Policy Academy. Panelists discuss their experience, share reform efforts, and update on the progress. Panelists shall impart ways jurisdictions may implement similar efforts to their facility and/or agency. Learning Objectives: 1. Provide an overview of the Length of Stay Policy Academy to include key factors contributing to youth length of stay and key research findings. 2. Recognize reform actions jurisdictions implemented to address length of stay and improve youth outcomes. 3.Update regarding jurisdictional reform efforts. the past three years, Virginia DOC has enhanced their visit space, provided programming and committed to coach correctional staff to grow their services and imbed family-friendly practices within their policies and procedures. Virginia DOC will also discuss plans to sustain and 1. Gain knowledge of how family engagement can be incorporated throughout policy and practice within a department of corrections, which includes parenting curricula, parenting groups, recorded messages, celebrations and other tools to enhance family connections during incarceration. 2. Develop an understanding of how to ensure correctional staff can provide a safe and productive family visit through modifications to visitation practices to include remodeling the environment, providing coaching to families in preparation for the visits and supporting incarcerated parents after visits. 3. Gain strategies to sustain projects and have an open lens to further develop safe, secure facilities where families can grow and connect.
