More than 24% have been previously diagnosed with major depressive order, 17% with bipolar disorder, 13% with a personality disorder and 12% with post-traumatic stress disorder. The numbers are even higher for people in jail, where one-third have been previously diagnosed with major depressive disorder and almost one-quarter with bipolar disorder. Jails and prisons have become de facto treatment centers. Statistics show Georgia is home to over 71,000 gang members or associates. As of September 2019, over 40% of youths committed to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice have identified as being gang affiliated, 65% in secure facilities. Whether youth are gang affiliated prior to entering the system or are recruited after entry, managing STG youth requires a strategy of identification, management, prevention and rehabilitation. DJJ has implemented a multi-disciplinary team approach to mitigate the impact of gang-related recruitment and violence. During this workshop, presenters will discuss

A-3A NYS DOCCS Office of Special Investigations — Escape from Dannemora: The Real Story Room 125B Track: Prisons The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) will present an inside account of the 2015 escape of two murderers from Clinton Correctional Facility — a maximum security prison in Northern New York. The real story is even more compelling than the news reports and the Showtime dramatization. The initial presentation will include an accurate description and chronology of events from planning to escape to capture and beyond, video of the actual route through the prison to the manhole taken hours after the escape and the Governor’s coordination of law enforcement which led to the capture of inmate David Sweat and the death of inmate Richard Matt. Learning Objectives: • Understand the ramifications of compromised security and civilian staff. • Describe the benefits of a coordinated law enforcement approach. • Identify security deficiencies which led to the escape.
