C hristopher Jones, PharmD, DrPH, MPH (CAPT U.S. Public Health Service), currently serves as the acting director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. When not serv - ing as the acting director, Dr. Jones is the deputy director of NCIPC. In this role, he is the primary scientific advisor to the NCIPC director and other senior staff on science is - sues in public health, clinical care implementation, epide- miology, biostatistics, economics and behavioral science. In addition, he provides scientific leadership and drives NCIPC’s strategic direction by overseeing the refinement of the scientific research agenda and the coordination on the NCIPC strategic priorities of drug overdose, suicide prevention and adverse childhood experiences.

Session Overview: This session will provide an update on the latest trends in substance use and overdose, with a focus on resurgent stimulant use and harms in the U.S., and the connection between the ongoing opioid crisis and rising stimulant and polysubstance use. In addition, the session will cover current programmatic efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including efforts to strengthen public health and public safety partnerships. Finally, the presentation will include an update on treatment strate- gies for stimulant use disorder and opioid use disorder. Objectives: • Describe the latest substance use and overdose trends in the United States. • Characterize the rise in stimulant use and harms in the midst of the ongoing opioid crisis. • Discuss treatment strategies for stimulant and opioid use disorders.
