C-3A The Maine Model of Corrections: Using Normalized and Humanized Approaches to Advance Corrections in the 21 st Century. Room 239 Tracks: Prisons/Jails Present the foundational work of the Maine Model of Corrections, including normalizing institutional practices, implementing humanitarian approaches to incarceration and destigmatizing corrections for both staff and residents. Focus will center on staff training, accountability and wellness, replacing restrictive housing practices with alternatives, universally expanding SUD treatment services (including medication), the importance of language and many related reform approaches occurring in Maine. Will also highlight the development and implementation process used to create two fully normalized housing units within two high security correctional facilities (and the lessons learned), and the early outcomes of this work.
