C-2B Operations and Environments Supporting Positive Outcomes for Inmates and Staff Room 242 Track: Prisons/Jails Modern correctional design is based on evidence-based research showing direct influence of the built environment on staff and inmates, in particular examples of acoustics, daylighting and negative effects on the people. The Skagit County Community Justice Center will be presented where pre- and post-occupancy surveys were conducted to provide evidence of the impact. Paired with operational programs that treat inmates with considerations of wellness for staff and inmate, the Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Joint Base Lewis McChord will be presented as a case study for advancements in corrections. This Army facility scheduled to open in 2022 will serve the military. The design prioritized operations that directly support people. Learning Objectives: 1.Understand the impact of the built environment on staff and inmates. 2.Understand how operations and programs within a facility enhance treatment of inmates. 3.See examples of modern correctional design that should be implemented in new construction and adapted in existing facilities. C-2A New PREA and Prisoner Findings from the Bureau of Justice Statistics: Sexual Victimization, Prisoner Histories, and Resources for Practitioners Tracks: Prisons/Jails Room 239 This workshop will include three presentations on topics of interest to corrections from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). The first two will discuss BJS’s work related to PREA, including findings on sexual victimization in juvenile facilities from the National Survey of Youth in Custody, plans for the next National Inmate Survey in prisons and jails and results from BJS’s annual Survey of Sexual Victimization related to allegations of sexual victimization reported by administrators of adult and juvenile facilities. The third will provide findings from BJS Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI) on state and federal prisoners and demonstrate how agencies can access and analyze SPI data to conduct their own analysis. Learning Objectives: 1.Participants will be able to access the most recent findings on the U.S. prison population on topics such as crimes committed, time served in prison, behavioral and physical health status and treatment, family background, as well as a profile of incarcerated veterans and incarcerated parents of minor children and access the SPI data and various options to analyze the data to support your agency’s priorities. victimization of youth in juvenile facilities, including facility-level estimates of youth reporting sexual victimization and victim, perpetrator, and facility characteristics of incidents, and BJS’s plans for the next iteration of the National Inmate Survey. 3.Participants will be able to identify new information with their agencies about incidents of sexual victimization allegations and outcomes of investigations 2.Participants will be able to discuss the latest BJS statistics on sexual
