Our Juvenile Programs Department works intentionally to develop a comprehensive network of programs and skill building opportunities through internal and external collaboration. Juveniles enjoy physical activity through Camp Cradle, an outdoor recreation program, launched in June 2019. The Walls of Detention are covered with framed inspirational quotes to encourage youth as well as serve as a conversation starter and teaching tool. The YMCA Y-Achievers program is the first inside of a detention facility and teaches life skills/youth development. Barber School and Horticulture have been created for stimulate brain and cognitive functions and build teamwork, helping staff manage youth. • Learn how daily inspirational quotes encourage officers and youth to hold positive conversations. • Clarify how uniform changes to polo shirts and khakis can change youth and staff perspective and how programs teach entrepreneurship/ skills. C-2D Addressing Reentry Challenges and Decreasing Recidivism Though Partnership, Technology-Focused Career Training and Continuous Long-Term Support Room 207D Track: Reentry/Community Corrections This workshop will illustrate the elements of a successful partnership between Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) and Persevere, a national non-profit organization, program beginning with software development (coding) and career readiness instruction in four correctional institutions and continuing with on-the-job training, employment placement, mentoring and intensive case management support provided for a minimum of 12-months post-release. This model for employment-focused reentry support has resulted in exemplary outcomes for participants, including low recidivism (2.5%) and high employment (100%) rates. Learning Objectives: • Identify the key components of an effective technology-focused career preparation program that includes a full range of training, job placement and long-term support services. • Identify the elements of an effective partnership between a public department of corrections and nonprofit organizations. • Articulate how challenges of implementing a technology-focused employment training and long-term support program can be overcome.
