Statistics show Georgia is home to over 71,000 gang members or associates. As of September 2019, over 40% of youths committed to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice have identified as being gang affiliated, 65% in secure facilities. Whether youth are gang affiliated prior to entering the system or are recruited after entry, managing STG youth requires a strategy of identification, management, prevention and rehabilitation. DJJ has implemented a multi-disciplinary team approach to mitigate the impact of gang-related recruitment and violence. During this workshop, presenters will discuss techniques used to identify and monitor gang-affiliated youth, classification throughout

B-3B The Power of Using Technology in a Correctional Setting Room 209B Track: Jails During the 2020 pandemic, correctional personnel were forced to look at ways to do business differently, and the solution was technology. Before the pandemic, correctional personnel stayed busy conducting normal facility operations, such as escorting inmates to various locations throughout the facility for legal visits, court appearances, classification interviews, program services and family visits. Since COVID-19, facility operations consist of less inmate movement outside the housing units. We now use technology to accomplish such operational tasks which, in the past, routinely occurred in person. With this implementation, technology assists us in safely completing operational tasks while avoiding unnecessarily exposing individuals to unknown health risks. Learning Objectives: • Understand how to use a virtual courtroom in the 21 st century. • Review how the intake process and inmate programming can occur virtually. • Recognize how the re-design of technology can enhance daily operations with less inmate movement.
