B-2C Gender Differences in Confinement: Effective Engagement with Male and Female Populations Room 207B Track: Staff Training Consideration of the person’s gender is often missed when communicating in correctional environments. Populations served are regarded as ‘inmate’, ‘resident’, and the like. This singular lens fails to consider how communication styles differ between men and women. When engaging with men and women in correctional facilities, understanding how words are perceived can make the difference between effective and ineffective communication. Learning Objectives: • Improve communication with correctional populations. • Enhance investigations of inmate sexual abuse by implementing a trauma-informed approach to communication. • Enhance working relationships through understanding how communication styles differ between men and women. As jails and prisons in the United States house a large number of justice-involved individuals, it is nearly impossible to maintain social distancing and limit movement inside a facility.
