Drugs: from the Borders to Inside the Fence 151 st Congress of Correction, Nashville, TN B-1A Plenary Session

Thursday, Aug. 12 th , 8:30–10 a.m., Room 209 A–C Even amid COVID-19 border closures, travel restrictions and shelter-in-place orders, global drug traffickers continue to smuggle, transport and distribute illicit drugs throughout the border states and beyond, even reaching into secure correctional settings. The Drug Enforcement Administration, law enforcement and correctional staff have been working daily to stay ahead of both current and new threats to maintain the safety of our communities, jails and prisons. This session will provide information on recent drug introduction and manufacturing trends seen throughout the country by federal, state and local law enforcement. Intervention approaches for correctional staff who encounter intoxicated individuals while working in community corrections and secure facilities will also be presented. Strategies to combat this crisis on the micro and macro level will be outlined, as well as how correctional staff across the nation can help prevent introduction of drug contraband into correctional settings.
