A-3E Introduction of Innovative Community Outreach Program entitled “Adopt-A-Prison” piloted at two New York State Correctional Facilities for Women Track: Security Participants will learn a step-by-step process of developing a working engagement between a community and its prisons. The Interfaith Prison Partnership (IPP) brought together the Prison Administrators of two local New York State prisons located within the town of Bedford and the Town Board for the Town of Bedford to explore improved engagement of the communities on both sides of “the wall”. A special Adopt-A-Prison community event attracted elected officials, local community members and 18 volunteer groups in conversation on better integration. Arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic kick-started these efforts into a broad outreach project. As a result, thousands of bars of soap, face masks, lotion, as well as hot plates, plasticware, wipes, stationery and stamps have been donated by the community. Learning Objectives: • Participants will learn how to initiate a dialogue between a Town Administration and its local Prison Administration. • Participants will learn about the tools needed to set up an Adopt-A-Prison event in one’s town. • Participants will learn the steps for the town government, the community and the prison to develop a working relationship.
