D-4C Pretrial Services and the Impact on Jail Population

Room 207C Track: Jails Pretrial services is a misunderstood

program. We strive to educate the public on the reason for pretrial release programs and its benefits. In this session, we will demonstrate how jails and the people of the community can benefit from a pretrial release program. Decreasing incarceration costs and providing resources to those released on pretrial will further demonstrate an adequate pretrial release program. Pretrial Service screeners utilize a risk assessment which indicates the “risk” of the defendant to complete the court appearance to the disposition of his/her case. Pretrial Services checks on defendant’s criminal history, court appearance records, outstanding warrants, police reports, nature of offenses and assessment tool evaluations (scores). This information is then submitted to the Commissioner or Judge to determine appropriate bail for release or detention for the defendant.
