request, Franklin County’s Sheriff’s Office continues to expand and innovate, and is now recognized as the first Center of Innovation for the National Institute of Corrections. In this workshop, the transformation from old, linear facilities (operating through a 1980’s jail management system) to a state-of-the-art, direct supervision facility will be examined. Collaboration with specialized experts which helped challenge and erase antiquated, and inefficient industry philosophies/practices will also be explored. This candid examination of one county’s philosophical and architectural advancement will provide attendees with relatable antidotes to universally prevalent, industry-wide obstacles. Objectives: Participants will understand the intersection between mental health and the building essentials with progressive justice design; review the transformation process that Franklin County’s Sheriff’s Office underwent to become a center for innovation; and explore challenges and solutions to applying similar changes in your jurisdiction. The Good Grid provided a common platform for all partners, including inmates to apply, review and process releases to Transitional Housing. B-2G Retaining the Younger Generation in the Corrections

The most effective resource to operating safe and effective correctional agencies is to have a dedicated and engaged workforce. Many agencies are struggling to retain the necessary level of workers to deliver safe and effective operations. This workshop will identify six key needs of the modern worker entering corrections that are research driven and practical. Participants will receive implementable ideas and examples of small changes that can be made to improve retention at

their respective agencies. It is necessary for agencies to approach retention holistically in all departments and all levels of supervision. Participants will leave this workshop empowered to improve retention with small, practical and reasonable steps. Objectives: Identify six key areas that the modern workforce needs from correctional agencies; implement practical and reasonable steps in their agencies to retain employees; and understand how to engage all levels of supervisors to ensure retention success.
