A-1D Dealing with Sexual Victimization in Youth Facilities: Findings from the Most Recent

National Survey of Youth in Custody (CE/CME) Room 204 This workshop will debut the findings from the 2018 National Survey of Youth in Custody (NSYC-3), part of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) National Prison Rape Statistics Program (NPRSP). The 2018 NSYC was conducted in 332 juvenile confinement facilities between April and December 2018, with a sample of 6,910 adjudicated youth. It will present the national prevalence of youth experiencing one or more incidents of sexual victimization, as well as the facilities identified as high rate and other characteristics of victimization as reported by the youth. This presentation also addresses current and future activities from the Survey of Sexual Victimization (SSV). Current SSV activities include recent findings based on public information. Objectives: Participants will understand the findings and administration of the 2018 NSYC, including the national prevalence of sexual victimization for adjudicated youth in juvenile facilities, rankings of facilities with the highest and lowest rates of sexual assault and state-level estimates of sexual victimization; identify the facility-level correlates of youth sexual victimization, significant youth characteristics that can youth victimization; develop familiarity with using the BJS online tool to submit SSV data; and discuss possible “next steps” that administrators can take both internally and externally for facilities identified as having high rates of sexual victimization. fatigue. Day in and day out, corrections workers struggle to function in care-giving environments that constantly present an emotional challenge. In corrections, staff try to affect a positive change in society, a mission so vital to those passionate about caring for others, it is sometimes perceived as elusive, if not impossible. Working in corrections takes its toll on everyone from full-time employees to part-time volunteers. This workshop will enable participants to recognize the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and how they can combat burnout and be the best they can be to others that look for their help. Objectives: Participants will be able to define compassion fatigue; recognize signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue; learn treatment and techniques on how to prevent compassion fatigue; and learn how to take care of themselves.
